Rites of Passage Documentary
Rites of Passage: Mentoring the Future (working title) is a 90 minute feature length documentary film that will do for rites of passage what Inconvenient Truth did for global warming–bring it out of the underground into the mainstream. Rites of Passage will be released through Frederick Marx’s independent, Oakland-based nonprofit production company Warrior Films.
Frederick Marx, the Academy and Emmy nominated filmmaker best known for Sundance Film Festival winner, Hoop Dreams, is making a new film about how important it is for teens to receive positive and healthy rites of passage and mentorship into adulthood.
“It’s something I never had and it’s something both research and life experience have proven to me we all need,” says Marx. “My belief is that every teen, deep in their bones, knows they deserve healthy, not destructive, rites of passage and mature adult mentorship.”

The villages are burning. Worldwide. An estimated $500 billion is spent yearly on teen dysfunctions in the U.S. alone: drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy and STDs, school dropouts and expulsions, gang and property crimes, traffic accidents, ADD, ADHD, depression and violence…
Culturally appropriate rites of passage and mentorship programs will help solve these problems. It just might be the silver bullet for youth development.
Our film will not only tell an inspirational story showing people exactly why ritually guided rites of passage and mentorship are necessary for all young people, it will offer the launching pad for a movement that begins right when the lights come up for communities’ to begin co-creating programs for their own youth right then and there.
